By Joe Donoghue | Author | Algonquin Media | Content Creator
As the founder of a content based business, my work revolves around social media content creation, advertising, photography, and videography for small and medium-sized businesses. But beyond my professional work, I’m also deeply passionate about nature, outdoors, and family adventure photography and videography.

Over the years, I’ve built a gear setup that blends run-and-gun efficiency with professional quality. Some of my equipment has been with me for over a decade, while I’ve slowly integrated newer technology like my DJI Mavic Air 2 drone and Osmo Pocket 3 for compact, high-quality video capture.
If you’re a content creator, photographer, or videographer looking for inspiration on building a versatile kit, here’s what I carry in my bag.
My Camera & Video Gear
Canon 50D DSLR (Soon to Be Upgraded to Mirrorless)

My workhorse DSLR, the Canon 50D, has been with me for years, but an upgrade to a mirrorless system is coming soon. I’m currently exploring options for a lighter, faster, and more advanced mirrorless setup to take my content creation to the next level. While it may not be the latest mirrorless tech, it’s reliable, rugged, and delivers excellent image quality. I pair it with:
- Wide-angle lens – Perfect for landscape and adventure shots.
- 50mm lens – A must-have for portraits and storytelling.
- Telephoto lens – Ideal for wildlife and action photography.
- Two external flashes – Great for on-the-go lighting control in both studio and outdoor shoots.
DJI Osmo Pocket 3 & DJI Osmo Mobile Gimbals
For stabilized, cinematic video, I use DJI Osmo Mobile Gimbals with my smartphone and the Osmo Pocket 3 for a compact yet powerful video setup. The built-in gimbal stabilization makes it easy to capture smooth footage whether I’m working on a professional shoot or filming personal adventures.
DJI Mavic Air 2 Drone
Aerial photography and video add an entirely new dimension to my work. The Mavic Air 2 is my go-to drone for high-resolution, stabilized shots of landscapes, outdoor adventures, and promotional videos.
Rode Wireless GO Microphone Kits
Clean, professional audio is just as important as video quality. My Rode Wireless GO mics ensure crystal-clear sound, whether I’m recording interviews, voiceovers, or capturing crisp ambient sounds in nature.
Editing & Storage Setup
MacBook Pro with Final Cut & Adobe Suite
All my photo and video editing happens on my MacBook Pro, equipped with Final Cut Pro and the full Adobe Suite. From Lightroom for photography to Premiere Pro for video editing, this setup ensures efficient post-production with high-quality results.
Storage & Backup
Having redundant storage is crucial for any content creator:
- 1TB SSD – Lightning-fast storage for active projects.
- Extra memory cards – Essential for keeping my cameras and drone rolling without interruption.
- Extra batteries – For my DSLR, gimbals, and drone, ensuring I never run out of power on a shoot.
Carrying & Adventure Gear – Bags for Days!

LowePro Camera Bag & Water-Resistant Waist Bag
For organized and accessible gear storage, my LowePro camera bag carries my DSLR, lenses, and accessories, while my water-resistant waist bag is great for quick-access items when I’m out in the field.
30L Day Pack
When I’m out in the wilderness, I use a 30L day pack that can hold my camera gear, drone, and outdoor essentials while keeping everything protected and accessible.
Outdoor Adventure Essentials
When shooting in the outdoors, comfort and durability are key:
- Field pants that I can wax – Durable, weather-resistant, and perfect for rugged conditions.
- Moisture-wicking tee – Essential for staying dry and comfortable on long shoots.
- Flannel & rain jacket – Layering is everything in unpredictable weather.
Final Thoughts: Building a Versatile Kit
The gear I carry has evolved with my professional content creation needs and personal adventures. Whether I’m filming high-end client work, capturing outdoor landscapes, or documenting family trips, my setup balances professional quality with mobility and efficiency.
If you’re looking to build or upgrade your content creation gear, I’d recommend focusing on versatility, durability, and the tools that best fit your workflow. Investing in reliable equipment—whether it’s a trusty DSLR, a compact gimbal, or a high-quality drone—will make all the difference in capturing stunning visuals with ease.
