Anthony Jackson had the opportunity to experience the all-new Canon R5 MKII at our Oakville retail location recently, and he wanted to share his thoughts on this groundbreaking new camera.
Canon Unveils the R5 MkII: A First Look at the Latest Innovation
In a highly anticipated release, Canon has introduced the R5 MkII, an advanced version of its popular R5 camera, featuring significant upgrades in design, battery, processor, and cooling system. The new model, showcased at our Henrys Retail Store in Oakville, promises to set new standards in both photography and videography. Read below.
Canon R5 MkII Design & Build
The Canon R5 MkII retains a familiar look but is slightly thicker due to the inclusion of a new vent on the underside. This feature is part of the camera’s enhanced passive cooling system.
According to Anthony Jackson, a representative at Henry’s, “The new battery, the LP-E6P, offers about 630 shots in photo mode and provides extra juice for video shooting. Your older LP-E6N batteries will still fit and work fine, but expect better performance with the E6P.”
Photo Specifications
Equipped with a 45MP sensor and 8.5 stops of in-body image stabilization (IBIS), the R5 MkII significantly improves low-light performance. The back-side illuminated sensor allows light to reach the pixels more efficiently, enhancing image quality. Additionally, the new DIGIC processor accelerates photo and video processing, offering improved readout speed and reduced rolling shutter in video mode.
Jackson highlighted the camera’s capabilities, stating, “The Canon R5 MkII features a 45MP sensor with 8.5 stops of IBIS, significantly improving low-light performance. The back-side illuminated sensor helps light reach the pixels more efficiently, enhancing image quality.”
The camera supports CFExpress Type B and fast SD cards, with a burst speed of 12 frames per second in mechanical shutter mode, which can be increased to 30 frames per second in electronic mode.
Eye Controlled Auto Focus
One of the standout features of the R5Mkii is the eye-controlled autofocus. This technology tracks where the user’s pupil is looking and adjusts the autofocus accordingly. “The eye-controlled autofocus is a game-changer. It tracks where your pupil is looking and adjusts the AF accordingly,” Jackson noted.
Enhanced Video Capabilities
Canon has addressed the cooling issues of the original R5 with a passive cooling design that includes two fans. The R5 MkII can shoot 8K60P video, though this is limited to 18 minutes without the cooling fan attachment. With the fan, users can get up to 120 minutes of 8K30P. The camera supports various 4K modes, including oversampled full-frame 4K, making it ideal for content creators.
“The R5 MkII has addressed the cooling issues with a passive cooling design that includes two fans. It can shoot 8K60P video, though this is limited to 18 minutes without the cooling fan attachment,” said Jackson.
Comparing the R5Mkii and the R5C
While both the R5 MkII and R5C share many features, the R5 MkII is more photo-centric. The R5C includes a built-in fan and a cinema menu system, whereas the R5 MkII requires an external fan attachment for extended video shooting. Jackson pointed out, “The R5 MkII and R5C share many features, but the R5 MkII is more photo-centric.”
Conclusion
The Canon R5 MkII represents a significant upgrade, combining high-resolution photography with advanced video capabilities. It is a versatile camera designed to meet the needs of professional photographers and content creators.
As Jackson summarized, “The Canon R5 MkII is a robust upgrade, blending high-resolution photography with advanced video capabilities.”
